Rory McIlroy is voted 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year by viewers after picking up a career Grand Slam and earning himself the green jacket at Augusta.

Voting has changed drastically for SPOTY over the years, and 2025 introduces the public vote, using social media channels as a key decider into who lifts the prestigious trophy.

Rory writes himself into the history books by becoming the first European to win a career Grand Slam a put himself amongst all time greats, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen and Gary Player. Winning the masters makes him only the sixth player to achieve the feat.

Other contenders for the SPOTY Award were Darts' Luke Littler, who became the youngest World Champion at the ripe age of 17 years and 347 days. Golf fans argue completing a career long dream, partnered with Europe's first Ryder Cup on US soil win since 2012 is a much bigger achievement.

The dream of winning The Open, a US Open, a US PGA Championship and The Masters were slowly slipping away for McIlroy. After coming completing the first 3 by 2014, it took a further 11 years to get hold of the Green Jacket - presented by Scottie Scheffler.
